THE JUDGMENT INTERRUPT

Catch the verdict. Widen the view. Return to the next honest step.

This is not forced positive thinking. The reframe can still name grief, harm, consequences, boundaries, or accountability. Its job is to interrupt a totalizing verdict about a whole human being.

Pattern 1

Harshness toward self

Thought
“I’m a mess. Everyone else has it together.”
Distortion
All-or-nothing thinking plus comparing one difficult part of your range with the part of someone else’s life you can currently see.
Range Reframe
You do not have one level in life. You have nine mountains, changing conditions, and different seasons on each. One mountain being at Base Camp does not define the climber.
Next Step
Name the mountain actually demanding attention tonight. Do its minimum viable practice.

Pattern 2

Condemnation of someone else

Thought
“They clearly don’t care. Look at their life.”
Distortion
Turning limited information about circumstances or behavior into a verdict about the whole person.
Range Reframe
You can see part of one slope on one day. You cannot see their full range, history, formation, weather, support, wounds, responsibilities, or terrain. Harm may still need to be named. The person is not therefore beneath you.
Next Step
Ask: “What terrain might I not be seeing?” Then decide whether the moment calls for compassion, accountability, a boundary, help, distance, or returning to your own trail.

Pattern 3

Superiority after ascent

Thought
“I finally figured this out. People who don’t are choosing poorly.”
Distortion
Turning recent progress, favorable conditions, or hard-earned skill into evidence of greater human worth.
Range Reframe
Altitude is not a pulpit. What you learned may make you useful on this terrain. It does not make you superior to the person who has not traveled it.
Next Step
Use today’s strength to offer a hand where appropriate, not a verdict. Protect the practices, rest, and humility that helped you climb.

Pattern 4

Tribal identity

Thought
“If my side is right, people on the other side must be fools or enemies.”
Distortion
Allowing one domain, identity, or conviction to become a total explanation of another human being.
Range Reframe
No single mountain contains a whole person. Politics, money, fitness, profession, social status, and spiritual performance can become false summits when we use them to decide who deserves dignity.
Next Step
Step out of the abstraction. Return to an embodied mountain: walk, call someone you love, sit in prayer or silence, repair something, do useful work, or serve a real person.

Use it on your own thought

Four questions.

  1. 1. Thought: What sentence am I actually repeating?
  2. 2. Distortion: What am I turning into a total verdict?
  3. 3. Range Reframe: What terrain, weather, history, formation, or uncertainty am I leaving out?
  4. 4. Next Step: What action is mine now — compassion, accountability, boundary, repair, help, distance, rest, or useful work?

Discern behavior. Do not pronounce human worth.
